Baran Dam was constructed, as a component of Kurram Garhi Project on Kurram River, and commissioned in 1962 to fulfill the irrigation needs of Marwat plains. With the passage of time, it became inevitable to enhance the useful life and storage capacity of Baran Dam. Different studies were conducted for the purpose.
Lastly, consultancy services for Updation of Old Feasibility Study and Preparation of New Detailed Feasibility Study for the Scheme “Increasing Capacity of Baran Dam by Raising the Dam Height & Construction of Tochi Baran Feeder Canal (TBFC)” was awarded in 2009 to a joint venture of BAK and AGES Consultants. Subsequently, Detailed Design and Construction Supervision was undertaken by the same JV during 2014 – 2023.
The project comprises of the following major components:
- Raising of Baran Dam (crest length 1275 m) by 7m to enhance its storage capacity to 123 Mm3 (100,000 Acre ft).
- Remodeling of the siphonic spillway for a discharge of 1274 cumecs.
- Diversion structures, including a head regulator, under sluices and an overflow weir (134 m long for a flow of 2375 cumecs), on Tochi River to divert flood flows into TBFC.
- Construction of the 8.83 Km long TBFC for a design discharge of 28.31 cumecs, with a number of structures including aqueducts (02 Nos. 85m & 130m), canal siphons (02 Nos. 253m & 641m), escapes (02), falls (06), super passages (11), access roads (9 Km), bridges (04), a district road bridge, and foot bridges, etc.
- Construction of two dykes (154 m & 160 m) and 4.5 m in height.
- Construction of a New Rest House (covered area 262 sqm).
- Rehabilitation of Marwat Canal.
