Upper Swat Canal originates from the Swat river at Amandara Headworks and bifurcates, a few kilometers downstream at Dargai village in Malakand Agency, into Machai and Abazai Branches. The off-take of Heroshah irrigation channel is some 8 km downstream of Dargai, at RD 26+000 (ft) along the Abazai Branch.

The project aims at providing irrigation water (about 22 cusecs) to the presently un-irrigated strip of 2143 acres lying on the right bank of Abazai canal. The project involved covers an overall length of about 12 kilometers as an open channel and includes a number of structures i.e. a head regulator, a siphon (93 m long), aqueducts (08), drainage structures (21), bifurcators (05), Open Flume (05), Pipe Outlets (19), Escapes / Side Spill (01), and Road Bridges (07), along with other facilities.

It is pertinent to mention here that detailed design of Heroshah Irrigation Scheme had already been undertaken by a joint venture of BAK and AGES Consultants, and construction supervision of the scheme was subsequently undertaken by the same joint venture.
