Additional Training Works and Amandara Headworks are located, on Swat River, at Batkhela, Malakand Agency. Upper Swat Canal (USC) was commissioned in 1918 to irrigate 1,117 sq.km (about 276,000 acres) with 50.9 cumecs design discharge. During implementation of Swabi SCARP, the USC was remodelled to 3180 cusecs (90 cumecs) with construction an additional tunnel across the Malakand Pass.

The USC is the main source of irrigation in the districts of Malakand, Mardan Swabi, it also feeds Malakand-III (80 MW), Jabban (20 MW) and Dargai (20) hydropower stations for generation of electricity. Likewise, Bazai Irrigation scheme was completed in 2016 to irrigate further 25,000 acres.

The historic flood of July 28, 2010 that hit the whole country especially Swat River Flood Plane Valley severely damaged the diversion gates/structures at the ATW, regulation cut, under sluices of the main headworks, marginal bund and glacis of the main weir. Restoration of all these components with protection walls along the banks of river Swat was made on emergency basis and the critical activities completed in record time to safeguard the remaining structure.
